You can, and it costs you. HMRC charge interest from the due date and a penalty that grows the longer it runs.
The cheaper route is Time to Pay, which is an arrangement rather than a default. Businesses that call before the due date get better terms than ones that call after.

I would make the Time to Pay call this week rather than after.
